Thanks to a Wheatridge Ministries matching grant and our members'
generous support, Lutheran Peace Fellowship's youth training
program is off to a wonderful start. "There are always surprises
in this work," says Kate Reuer, LPF youth trainer. "Doors
have opened (and shut) in ways I never expected. Keeps it interesting,
that's for sure!"
LPF's youth work has taken on a multi-faceted look, as Kate
works with youth directors, high school and college students...doing
nonviolence workshops, meeting people at conferences, organizing
around the war on terrorism: "I feel great about the opportunity
to work with young people who are committed to building a better
future," says Kate.
Kate has been able to connect with youth workers and high
school students by facilitating workshops at national conferences
and regional retreats. She's had great success connecting with
people who either didn't know LPF existed or have been out of
touch with the organization for a while. "I can feel the
momentum growing," says Kate. "I've had such inspiring
conversations about becoming more involved with LPF and how LPF
can better meet the needs of young people and those working with
youth. Such conversations are among the most exciting parts of
my job!"
LPF has also received a boost in its work on campuses. By
working with Lutheran Campus Ministry programs and the Lutheran
Student Movement as well as in Lutheran colleges and seminaries,
LPF has increased its visibility in college circles. LPF has
led campus workshops which has sparked interest in further activity,
e.g. a longer, intensive training this summer (see page 16).
"Talking with young people about peace and justice issues
from a Christian perspective is such an incredible experience,"
says Reuer. "From my position as facilitator, I'm able to
see them 'get it' and turn to their friend in amazement as they
contemplate a whole new perspective on what Jesus was all about."
"Lutheran Peace Fellowship is about Lutherans and Peace
but it is also about the Fellowship that we find in relationship
with each other," says Reuer. "I've been so inspired
by the work that Lutherans are doing to promote peace and work
for justice on any number of levels. The connections I'm making
with young people around the country are for me an especially
rewarding part of this endeavor!"
